The agreement is also a first for Netflix which had not connected to an internet exchange established under the Open-IX initiative before.
AMS-IX announced its US operations in November, and Job Witteman said he was pleased to have Netflix as its first customer.
“One of the main reasons to broaden our scope to the US is to offer our US-based customers the value of a neutral and distributed internet exchange,” Witteman said.
“Netflix is the first customer to take advantage of this.”
Netflix connected to AMS-IX in Amsterdam earlier this year and David Temkin, director of network architecture and strategy at the company – and chair of the board of directors at the Open-IX initiative – said that Netflix’s experience with the exchange in Amsterdam made the US connection an easy choice.
“Netflix has been one of the key drivers of the Open-IX initiative,” Temkin added.
“With our connection to AMS-IX New York we can finally get benefit from the European Internet Exchange model in the US.”
Temkin formed part of the firey panel session between carriers and OTT players at Capacity Europe in Amsterdam last month.
