Prolexic Technologies claims it is a pioneer in fighting service attacks that cripple networks by overwhelming them with internet traffic, and the move will further boost Akamai’s security offerings.
Akamai already aims to include some services for protecting websites against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, which are among the most common types of internet threats.
The company’s CEO, Tom Leighton, believes the deal will help grow the group’s profits in the long term.
“As we integrate the companies, we are very confident that we can grow and scale the business to drive significant growth over the long term, as the business and market opportunity grows,” he said.
DDoS attacks in recent years have made the headlines globally, with a campaign launched last year against US banks using the threat, which was linked to Iran, in addition to ongoing attacks from hacker activists.
Prolexic was founded in 2003 and its customers include a range of banks, energy firms, government agencies, gaming sites and healthcare companies. Its competitors include large operators, including AT&T and Verizon Communications.
The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2014.
