The trial was conducted over a 350km existing optical link between Sydney and Canberra, carrying live network traffic via Nextgen’s high-capacity 100G transport network.
“Alcatel-Lucent’s success with Nextgen is the latest in a series of successful 400G trials conducted this year in Europe and North America,” said Sean O’Halloran, president and MD at Alcatel-Lucent Australia.
“It was our first 400G DWDM demo in the Asia-Pacific region and, unlike those of our competitors; it was carried out over a live network.”
Alcatel-Lucent’s 400G technology demonstrated speeds of up to 17.6Tbps – the equivalent of 266 voice calls or the transmission of 88 Blu-ray discs in one second.
“Nextgen is in the midst of a major network upgrade to all Australian capital cities with a high speed optical network optimised for services at 100Gbps and higher and providing increased flexibility and manageability,” said Phil Martell, CTO, Nextgen Group.
“The trial is an important step on the path to offering our customers the differentiated services they want in the fastest and most economical way.”
In October this year, Alcatel-Lucent partnered with Zain KSA in Saudi Arabia for the deployment of an Agile Optical Network in the country.
