Telefónica subsidiary Movistar and Millicom-backed Tigo are now offering the service based on LTE mobile broadband in Bogota, Medellin, Barranquilla and Bucaramana.
Movistar has extended the service to also launch in the city of Cali, according to local reports. The company has said it expects to cover 58 cities by July next year, with a planned investment of $362 million.
Wireless operator Claro has said it will introduce LTE technology on a commercial basis in 2014, and the country’s three larger cellular operators, in addition to DirecTV and Avantel were awarded LTE spectrum in June this year.
Tigo won licences in the 2100MHz and 1700MHz bands, while Claro and DirecTV were awarded 2.5GHz concessions.
