Intel acquires Mindspeed’s wireless assets

US chipmaker Intel has purchased the wireless infrastructure division of Mindspeed Technologies, in an effort to expand its telecoms offering through radio technology.

Mindspeed, a wireless telecommunications manufacturer, is subject to a wider takeover by Macom, supplier of high performance RF, microwave and millimetre wave products, after signing an agreement on 5 November.

The divestment to Intel is part of the agreed acquisition, and is expected to close in February next year.

The deal supports Intel’s plans to bring its architecture to the telecommunications market. Intel is planning to use its new assets for its mobile roadmap.

Intel said the acquisition will give it the expertise in wireless infrastructure it needs, as well as the technology for signal processing and intellectual property for telecommunications base stations.

The wireless infrastructure division of Mindspeed has sites in Bath, England; Newport Beach, California; and Beijing and Shenzhen, China.
