The OIX is a neutral, non-profit industry association designed to endorse better standards for data centre interconnection and internet exchanges in the North American region.
“Interest in achieving OIX certification has been tremendous,” said Martin Hannigan, co-founder and treasurer of the Open-IX Association.
In order to become OIX certified, a data centre or IXP is required to submit an application, deposit and processing fee to be reviewed by the executive board of the association.
Once approved, data centres and IXPs must then complete a compliance report to meet the technical requirements of the OIX.
“In addition to applying for OIX certification, industry members who are interested in internet exchange points and data centre interconnection and infrastructure, interconnect engineering, or research can also join the OIX as members,” Hannigan added.
Successful members will have the opportunity to provide input on shaping the operations, engineering and future of interconnecting networks.
Late last year – shortly after the Open-IX was formed – European internet exchanges AMS-IX, and DE-CIX, launched internet exchanges in the US market through the initiative.
