The Myanmar government opened the telecom sector to foreign investment last year, a sector previously dominated by two state-owned incumbent companies. In June last year Ooredor and Telenor won 15-year 3G licences.
The two operators have announced plans to invest approximately $15 billion and $2 billion respectively in the project and are in talks to share transmitter towers in Myanmar to enable cost savings.
It was announced in December last year that Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) will be Ooredoo’s key supplier for its radio and core equipment services, to support the launch of 3G services in the country.
