Vodafone and BSkyB hold discussions over BT

UK operator Vodafone and media group BSkyB have reportedly held discussions over how to curb BT’s growing presence in the country’s broadband market.

According to national reports in the UK, representatives from both companies have held high-level discussions, with the telecom operator’s influence on the high-speed broadband market, in addition to its pay-TV offering for football, at the top of the agenda.

Billionaire Rupert Murdoch’s BSkyB and Vodafone are discussing ways to integrate Sky’s sports and movie packages with a high-speed broadband service, according to sources.

Sources claim however it will be near-impossible for the two companies to build a nationwide fibre network, as such a project would cost billions of pounds.

BT has significantly increased investment in fibre in recent months, and is spending over £3 billion to roll out the service to 90% of homes by next year.

It has also spent up to £2 billion on sports broadcasting rights, according to the Sunday Times newspaper in the UK.
