The company launched its 4G network in April 2013 and rolled out the service in phases, with coverage initially available in Doha, the country’s capital.
“Activating the 500th site means that the 4G service range is now extended to cover the whole of Qatar,” Ooredoo reported.
Ooredoo is Qatar’s only 4G LTE mobile network operator, and the company announced at the same time that it is upgrading the network to improve indoor and outdoor performance and reduce service interruptions.
Ooredoo appears to be looking to extend its global 3G and 4G footprint, as the roll-out in Qatar follows reports last year that the company would invest $15 billion in a 3G network in Myanmar.
Ooredoo have been granted telecoms operation licences in Myanmar, after winning the right to roll out mobile services over six months ago.
It was announced in December last year that Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) will be Ooredoo’s key supplier to support the launch of 3G services in the country.
