“Oman is an important gateway to the Middle East," said Brendan Ives, who was appointed CEO of TeliaSonera in January this year. "Partnering with Oman’s leading wholesale telecommunications provider was a natural choice in the expansion of our network."
The partnership allows TeliaSonera to utilise Oman’s strategic location as a landing point for 10 regional cable systems, to meet growing customer demands for high performance connectivity.
“Oman’s geographical advantage being a natural hub enabled Omantel to become a key interconnection point for international carriers,” said Amer Al Rawas, CEO of Omantel.
“Partnering with TSIC positions us as a true link between the east and the west. It has expanded our visibility and positioned Omantel as the go-to provider for international carriers and service providers seeking to do business in Oman, as well as the rest of the Middle East,” he added.
The partnership builds on TeliaSonera’s 20 year experience with Middle Eastern operators, as well as its position as one of the leading providers of internet backbone routes in the region. The company owns and operates its 100G-enabled fibre network and has over 200 PoPs worldwide.
In September last year, the Omani government announced plans to sell a 19% stake in Omantel.
