Telkom Akses is responsible for deploying Indonesia’s national broadband infrastructure, and Alcatel-Lucent will upgrade the network, enabling fibre to the premises (FTTx) and ultra-broadband access for Indonesian customers.
“Deployment of Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON technology in Indonesia will contribute greatly to achieving our country’s goal of closing the digital divide and giving all of our people access to broadband, whether they are living closely together in our cities or widely dispersed in our rural areas,” said Badriyanto Moesalim, CEO at Telkom Akses.
“We believe that providing reliable and affordable ultra-broadband on a national level will positively and significantly impact Indonesia’s citizens in the areas of economics, education and healthcare, by providing a richer, more interactive experience,” he added.
The upgrade will begin in Indonesia’s eastern region and, once completed, Alcatel-Lucent’s solution will enable the delivery of services such as IPTV, video on demand and VoIP, as well as speeds of up to 100Mbps.
Indonesia is predominantly a rural country comprising over 17,000 islands, and the upgrade forms part of the government’s TITO (Trade In Trade Off) project, which is replacing copper cables in the country with optical fibre.
In January this year, Telkom Indonesia signed an MoU with Telstra for the creation of a joint venture in south east Asia.
