Vodafone Germany launches Berlin LTE upgrade plan

Vodafone Germany has reportedly begun improving its Berlin network as part of a nationwide LTE upgrade plan.

The operator plans to invest €4 billion ($5.6 billion) in the nationwide modernisation programme over the next two years

Upgrades in Berlin will see hardware and software improve in more than 500 sites over the next few weeks and work is expected to be completed by June.

The move is expected to provide customers with faster data speeds, improved network quality and fewer dropped calls.

Vodafone finalised its acquisition of Kabel Deutschland in October last year, and the operator’s CEO Vittorio Colao yesterday outlined his plans to use Kabel Deutschland as the “core” of Vodafone’s fixed-line German operations.

In February, Vodafone Germany also claimed to be the first European carrier to conduct a live test of LTE broadcast with Ericsson, Qualcomm and Samsung.
