The “MBit Index Study” showed that data traffic generated by 3G services jumped by 146% in 2013 – a figure higher than the world average, which estimates it to double each year – and saw 2G data traffic grow 59% over the same period.
“India is recording mobile broadband data growth figures higher than most other markets,” said Sandeep Girotra, head of India region at NSN. “With the recent spectrum auctions paving the way for acceleration of mobile broadband penetration in the country, there is a great opportunity for India to create a world-class infrastructure and improve the lives of millions of Indians.”
The report also revealed that Indian 3G customers are, on average, consuming more data than those using 2G, as well as highlighting that 2013 saw a higher migration of customers moving from 2G to 3G.
NSN claims to be the leading mobile broadband and managed services provider in the country, and said it plans to help address the explosion in mobile data traffic in India, as well as improve service quality.
Earlier this month, NSN signed an agreement with Vodafone India to upgrade the operator’s network in the country.
