The trial, conducted between February 24 and March 6 this year, ran 400Gbps technology on Telekom Austria’s existing fibre-optic cables.
“The continuing increase in data volumes in the years to come will require the timely planning of new technologies over long-distance networks,” said Günther Ottendorfer, CTO at Telekom Austria.
“The smooth transmission of voice telephony, mobile and fixed-net internet, as well as high-definition cable television is an important precondition to be able to meet the needs of an ever-growing customer base,” he added.
Telekom Austria partnered with long-term associate Alcatel-Lucent for the trial, which demonstrated that it was possible to achieve a four-fold increase in data rates from 100G to 400G.
Alcatel-Lucent implemented its 400G photonic service engine technology on Telekom Austria’s fibre-optic network and Luis Martinez Amago, president of EMEA at Alcatel-Lucent, said that the trial is the latest of many for the technology.
“Following the announcement last year of our work with Telekom Austria to deliver 100G technology, this trial further highlights both our leadership in optical networking as well as our understanding of Telekom Austria’s need for innovation,” he said. “Alcatel-Lucent’s 400G solution will help the company ensure the reliable transport of high-demand residential and mission-critical business services.”
In September last year, Telekom Austria’s subsidiary A1 partnered with solutions provider Coriant to complete a 400G trial.
