The companies today announced a five-year agreement which will see Ericsson support the roll-out of Telenor’s 2G and 3G nationwide network in Myanmar.
“We are pleased to add Ericsson to the group of global partners we will be working with as we develop the Telenor Myanmar telecommunications network,” said Petter Furberg, CEO at Telenor Myanmar.
“This is a historic project for Myanmar and for Telenor, and strong partners like Ericsson will be critical to its success,” he added.
Ericsson will deploy its multi-standard network solution, designed to enable Telenor to minimise operational costs by compressing a number of systems into one fully optimised RAN.
The vendor will also prepare Telenor’s 2G and 3G infrastructure for expected future network upgrades.
"Our proven experience in building networks in countries with diverse geographical conditions gives us the confidence that we can create a robust infrastructure for Telenor that will give Myanmar citizens a rewarding mobile experience,” said Jan Wassenius, country manager of Ericsson Myanmar.
“We hope the deployment of this telecommunications infrastructure will have an enormous positive impact on the economy of the country and on the lives of its citizens,” Wassenius added.
Telenor secured a mobile licence in Myanmar in June last year – alongside Qatari operator Ooredoo – and both were granted their official licences in January 2014.
It seems both Telenor and Ooredoo have put their faith in Nordic vendors, with the latter selecting Finland’s NSN for the roll-out of its network in Myanmar last December.
