To beat the OTTs at their own game, operators will probably need not one value-added LTE service, but a range. There may be no single killer LTE app. The way forward may be to add value to small groups of subscribers at a time, and innovate at a micro level.
For true LTE innovation, counter-intuitively, it may be useful to look to markets where the technology is in the earliest phase of adoption of all, believes Timo Ahomäki, CTO at Tecnotree, a vendor of messaging and billing solutions.
“It will be interesting to see where places like Africa and Latin America go with LTE services, as operators there have power to bring about change that you don’t find in developed markets,” he says. “Orange Uganda, for example, is already innovating with LTE services for the enterprise.”
