PCCW signs MPLS deal with Telecom Namibia

Service provider PCCW Global has signed an agreement with Telecom Namibia for MPLS interconnection in the country.

The deal will enhance the Namibian incumbent’s international network coverage, and is expected to benefit the service offerings of both companies.

“This co-operation is one of the important milestones to date in our quest to develop our international business, particularly with regard to international data services,” said Ernst Nitschke, head of international and wholesale services at Telecom Namibia.

“The relationship with PCCW Global allows us to extend the coverage of our services from Namibia to the rest of the world, and we will in turn facilitate like access in Namibia to PCCW Global,” he added.

Telecom Namibia will use PCCW’s MPLS network – which covers more than 3,000 cities in more than 130 countries across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas – to extend its Ethernet and IP VPN service coverage.

The deal will also enable PCCW to provide international customers with local access beyond Namibia and into the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

“We are very pleased to work with Telecom Namibia and enhance our local coverage in one of the most important countries on Africa’s west coast,” said James Welch, VP and head of sales for EEMEA at PCCW Global.

“Our co-operation with Telecom Namibia, which is built on a long and fruitful relationship stretching back more than 10 years, will yield significant benefits for both companies, and will also open up new opportunities in the African market,” Welch explained.

PCCW Global is one of 17 international telcos investing in the AAE-1 cable – connecting countries in Asia, Africa and Europe. In March this year, the company reiterated its commitment to African connectivity via a partnership with Phase 3 Telecom in West Africa.
