Lightower completes Washington network expansion

Network services provider Lightower has completed its 400-mile network expansion in the Washington DC metro area.

The enhancement is designed to deliver bandwidth speeds of up to 100Gbps, and the company said demand is driven by growth across enterprises, institutions, government, wireless, social media and cloud.

According to an industry report from Bell Labs, total metro area traffic will increase by 560% by 2017, primarily driven by IP video, cloud and data centres.

“DC is home to world-renowned universities, healthcare organisations, multinational organisations, law firms, the federal government, military agencies and so much more,” said Rob Shanahan, CEO of Lightower.

“With traffic volumes growing so quickly in the DC metro area, we invested heavily here in order to connect more locations and ensure that we are prepared to serve the growth that we are seeing,” he added.

The upgrade sees the provider connect important cities, towns and counties in the north east, including northern Virginia and Maryland.

In October last year, PCCW Global signed an agreement with Lightower to establish Ethernet international interconnectivity (E-NNIs) between their respective networks.
