Located in Sabey’s 1 million square foot facility, the companies claim it will be the only distributed and neutral Open-IX certified internet exchange in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area.
At the launch ceremony, Eberhard van der Laan, the mayor of the city of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, said that there was increased support for the Open-IX model, which is driving the movement to spread the European neutral and distributed model for exchanging traffic between major networks.
The exchange has already signed Netflix and IX Reach as the first two AMS-IX customers in New York, with 16 additional customers applying for connection to the facility.
“I strongly believe that a distributed exchange model offers the best value, by enabling a choice of connectivity options in as many data center locations as makes business sense,” said Job Witteman, CEO of AMS-IX.
Open-IX is an initiative started by a group of internet network operators, content owners and distributors, and other market parties to encourage the development of the neutral and distributed internet exchange model in the US.
