Tata Communications, Chinese vendor Huawei and submarine cable network provider Huawei Marine have announced the successful completion of a 400G field trial on a 6,000km subsea network. Claimed to be a milestone for the industry, the trial demonstrated an optical transmission of 400G signals using technology from both Huawei and Huawei Marine. [read more]

Nokia and NTT DoCoMo have agreed to collaborate on the research and standardisation of 5G technology, building on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in January this year. The two companies will work to develop a 5G proof of concept (PoC) in order to make future 5G networks fit for extreme demands on capacity and performance. [read more]

Tata Communications and Orange have announced an interconnect agreement for IPX and signalling sigtran to allow for global IP networks to interconnect over their respective IPX platforms. Tata and Orange will utilise their worldwide network capabilities to allow for mobile operators to deploy innovative broadband services including HD voice, and the peering agreement is designed to enable faster connections and better VoIP quality. Iraq has allowed the three mobile operators in the country to launch 3G services. The decision to allow operators Zain Iraq, Asiacell and Korek to use 3G frequencies was made by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, and it reverses an earlier decision to hold a multimillion dollar spectrum auction. Operators O2 and T-Mobile have agreed on a LTE network-sharing deal in the Czech Republic, in an effort to accelerate their 4G roll-out in the country. The deal will see the two companies sharing LTE radio networks, allowing them to meet coverage conditions set in the country's latest spectrum auction ahead of schedule. [read more]

Alcatel-Lucent has upgraded the Apollo subsea cable system, which connects the UK and France to the US. The French vendor has upgraded the route using multiple 100Gbps technology, in light of the continued global demand for data from capacity-hungry applications such as cloud computing and video-on-demand. Network specialist Ciena has partnered with Brocade to jointly develop a network-sharing solution, allowing service providers to benefit from a more agile and automated cloud data centre infrastructure. The two companies have combined their products to create a cloud orchestration solution that provides dynamic resource provisioning between data centres, which is set to launch next week. British operators Vodafone, EE and O2 have completed the implementation of mobile and internet services in the north-running Eurotunnel route, from the UK to France. The deal was first floated in January this year and customers on this route will now be able to make calls and use internet services on their mobile devices. [read more]

Algérie Télécom and Swedish vendor Ericsson have signed an agreement which will see the deployment of an end-to-end LTE network in Algeria, claimed to be the first LTE and VoLTE enabled network in Northern Africa. The Algerian operator selected Ericsson's LTE solution in an effort to provide greater coverage and better services for Algérie Telecom's fixed-broadband subscribers, including voice and video calling over LTE (VoLTE). Telecom NZ has partnered with Huawei to trial 4G through 700MHz spectrum in New Zealand. The trial will begin at the end of this month and run on 11 cell sites in three locations, lasting for up to four weeks. [read more]
