Fernandez will take on the role in September 2014, and his appointment comes as part of a management reshuffle by Orange’s CEO Stephane Richard, who was re-elected for a second term in March.
“Ramon brings his widely recognised expertise in the financial world,” Richard said of Fernandez’s appointment, during the group’s annual shareholder meeting.
Fernandez has spent the entirety of his career within the French administration and will hold the title of deputy CEO at Orange, as well as CFO.
Richard has also appointed Laurent Paillassot – who has previously held positions in a number of French banks – as co-deputy CEO to help the company focus on its mobile banking services.
Richard is reportedly trying to stabilise Orange’s operating profit during a turbulent time for the company in its home market, by expanding both its service and market reach.
As well as mobile banking services, Orange is looking to develop its cloud computing services in a number of markets, including Poland, Madagascar and several others in Africa.
Earlier this week, Orange launched an initiative in Nigeria to increase innovation in the country.
