Angola presently hosts a landing site for the WACs cable, and the African landing site for the South Atlantic Cable System (SACS), with Angola Cables managing the country’s participation on both projects.
Through the agreement, the company will be supported by DE-CIX through an MoU that is designed to create an enhanced interconnection environment for more robust internet services throughout the region.
Angola reportedly has up to 20Gbps of internet traffic a day and demand across the whole of Africa could rise to approximately 20Tbps by 2020 from its present rate of 1Tbps, according to TeleGeography.
“Angola is at an important point in its history,” said António Nunes, president of Angola Cables. “The MOU comes at a critical time in the development of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) internet market, as major global and local players increasingly face the challenge of promoting innovative internet services while continuing to ensure safe and effective online usage. DE-CIX has experience in developing strong internet ecosystems around the world, and we look forward to working with them.”
For DE-CIX, the agreement builds on its presence worldwide, with a specific focus on helping the African continent increase its growth in the internet in the future.
“The internet market within SADC has developed quickly over the past few years, providing opportunity for further development and expansion,” said Harald Summa, executive board member of DE-CIX international. “Angola Cables is an innovator, playing a pivotal role in the development of the entire region.”
