The 4G network is now live in 72 sites around central Auckland following a three-month trial, and comes ahead of 2degree’s initial schedule.
“Our trial showcased 4G at its finest, recording some outstanding download and upload speeds,” said Steward Sherriff, CEO at 2degrees.
Sherriff said that the 4G network will not cost its customers extra, but it will make it easier to hit data caps.
“It should help us better compete in the pay-monthly market and in particular in the business segment,” Sherriff told local reporters.
The launch will also better place 2degrees to compete with rival operators in the country, Vodafone and Telecom NZ, which also offer 4G services.
The company plans to triple its 4G coverage in Auckland by the end of the year, as well as make the services available in Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch.
The company plans to roll out 4G services to provincial areas in early 2015.
