Canada to auction prime spectrum for smaller operators

The Canadian government is set to announce an auction of prime spectrum in a bid to promote competition and allow smaller operators to compete with the country’s larger players.

Canada’s telecoms market is mainly dominated by the country’s larger operators, including Bell Canada, Rogers Communications and Telus.

The auction of “AWS-3 spectrum” will have restrictions, allowing smaller players to make bids for a certain part of it in regions where they operate.

The auction will take place ahead of an offering of 2500MHz frequencies in April 2015, but reports state that AWS-3 will be more valuable as it functions in urban and rural areas of the country.
