NTT DoCoMo and Qualcomm launch VoLTE in Japan

NTT DoCoMo and Qualcomm subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, have announced the launch of what is claimed to be the first commercial VoLTE service in Japan.

The VoLTE solution is based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor and enables SMS, HD voice, video telephony and single radio voice call continuity; designed to allow for a smooth transition between 3G and LTE.

“NTT DoCoMo has launched the leading edge voice and video service, allowing VoLTE to be [made] available commercially nationwide in Japan as of June,” said Kazuaki Terunuma, VP and managing director of the communications device development department at NTT DoCoMo.

The solution is also designed to deliver faster voice connections with a simultaneous voice and data rate of up to 150Mbps over LTE.

“We are pleased to work with NTT DoCoMo on the first large-scale commercial VoLTE launch, which is designed to provide their customers in Japan with faster, more consistent user experiences,” said Serge Willenegger, VP of product management at Qualcomm Technologies.

“From improved voice call quality to faster data access, users will recognise the many benefits provided by the…VoLTE solution.”

Last month, Kuwait’s Zain and Nokia Networks completed a successful VoLTE call using the operator’s network.
