A LTE-enabled transmission tower has been installed in Haimay, the largest island in the archipelago, to coincide with a national festival. A number of 2G and 3G transmitters were also deployed to support increased demand.
Vodafone Iceland initially rolled out its 4G service in July 2013 in Reykjavik and Borgarnes, which was later expanded to cover Iceland’s second largest urban area, Akureyri.
As of this month, Vodafone’s Icelandic 4G network is live in Reykjavik, Fludir, Hafnarfjordur, Egilsstodum, Selfoss, Reykholt, Borgarbyggd, Hrisey, Husavik, Eyjafjordur, Akranes, Egilsstadir, Dolvik and Akureyri.
In May 2012, Hibernia Atlantic highlighted the potential for Iceland as a data centre hub.
