The WBA is an industry body focussed on driving next-generation Wifi services, and almost every country in the world is now represented in the alliance.
The 14 additions include Telstra, Liberty Global, Telus, Mobily, Alcatel-Lucent, Charter Communications, Gemalto, Broadcom, Global Reach, Linktel, BAI, Airi Ventures, DigiCert and Elitecore.
“These new additions join at a critical time, when the benefits of Wifi have been fully recognised and solutions such as NGH (next-generation hotspot), Carrier Wifi and Community Wifi have finally broken into the commercial world,” said Shrikant Shenwai, CEO at the WBA.
“Our new members play a crucial role in ensuring that consumers connecting to a Wifi network will be exposed to the best user experience possible, regardless of time or location.”
The WBA hopes to develop a number of initiatives to promote global Wifi roaming and compliant interoperability, as well as carry out NGH trials, in a bid to make Wifi as seamless and secure as possible.
Existing WBA operators – which include AT&T, BT, Comcast, Orange and Time Warner Cable – serve approximately 1 billion subscribers and operate more than 10 million hotspots worldwide.
