CityFibre is collaborating with Scottish firm Internet For Business (IFB) to develop its digital infrastructure and bring transformational gigabit speeds to over 6,000 companies and hundreds of public-sector sites including schools, universities, libraries, hospitals and government agency buildings across the city.
“We selected Aberdeen as it represents the perfect opportunity for a Gigabit city project. Its economic power, business make-up and absence of alternative network mean that Aberdeen will be in a position to take full advantage of this transformational digital infrastructure,” said CityFibre CEO Greg Mesch.
The two companies are collaborating in a bid to develop its multi-million investment in the city and plans to upgrade and migrate business customers on to the new infrastructure.
The Gigabit city project is seen as critical to Aberdeen in becoming a national economic business hub, and the city could account for 28% of the country’s GDP.
30% of the UK’s top 100 businesses are located in the city, and it has the second-highest broadband rates in the UK, but lacks cable infrastructure.
However, with new gigabit fibre infrastructure in place, Aberdeen could leapfrog other Scottish cities to become the most digitally connected in Scotland.
“We are delighted to be working with CityFibre to give businesses in Aberdeen the opportunity to grow. We know how important connectivity services are to businesses in Aberdeen as there is always an increasing demand for more bandwidth,” added Graeme Gordon, CEO of IFB.
