The speed of 3Tbps, or 3000Gbps, was reached on September 14, and is a significant increase from the speed of 2.4Tbps in September 2013.
Job Witteman, CEO at AMS-IX, said that breaking the record underlines the company’s leading position in the IXP market.
“In the past year, some great, international organisations for who the internet is of vital importance, connected to AMS-IX,” Witteman said.
“The data traffic that is being exchanged via AMS-IX keeps on growing.”
The use of online video, cloud-based infrastructure, online gaming and internet access via mobile devices is largely to thank for the increase in traffic and the new organisations to connect to AMS-IX include gaming firms Wargaming Interactive and Riot Games.
“This proves that continuous expansion of our network, the increase of existing connections, adding exchange locations to our network and improving technical support is profitable,” Witteman said.
Last week, AMS-IX US launched a new PoP in San Francisco in partnership with Digital Realty.
