US-based Apcera is the creator of next-generation Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), Continuum, which works across cloud, on premise and hybrid environments, and Ericsson hopes the acquisition to allow it to deliver a broader and more complete range of cloud automation services.
Jason Hoffman, VP and head of product line cloud software at Ericsson said that the beauty of the cloud is that it is much more efficient for the development, implementation and operation of applications.
“To realise the full potential, cloud environments need security and governance, which… our acquisition of a majority stake in Apcera provides,” said Hoffman.
“With these technologies in place, enterprises and individuals can trust the integrity and the confidentiality of their infrastructure.”
Cloud is one of the key areas Ericsson is targeting for growth – while significantly reducing its focus on the modem business – and establishing leadership in PaaS is deemed key to its success.
“With a history of transforming the world’s most demanding businesses and the global ability to deploy and scale critical infrastructure, Ericsson will enable us to accelerate our innovation of Continuum,” said Derek Collison, founder and CEO at Apcera.
“[It will also] provide enterprises the next-generation platform that enables them to achieve a significantly faster time-to-market as they deploy, orchestrate and govern a diverse set of workloads, both on premise and in the cloud.”
Apcera will operate as a standalone company following completion of the acquisition which is expected to close during Q4 2014 and is subject to customary closing conditions.
