The auction is being held in accordance with plans to strip some power away from TV-market leader Televisa, which the country’s population believes holds too much political power.
According to reports, the terms of the auction has also changed in a bid to encourage bidders to develop proposals that promote national and local content.
Any international bidder must however be approved by the national commission of foreign investment. The winning bidder will gain a 20-year right for two national TV networks, with a combined 246 frequency across 153 locations.
An unnamed consortium submitted a bid to form a state-owned mobile network in the country earlier this week.
