The launch comes a month after rival operator Ooredoo’s which established services on August 2.
Mandalay is the second-largest city in the country and will be the first to enjoy coverage, followed by the capital Nay Pyi Taw and the largest city Yangon.
“It is rewarding for Telenor to be able to contribute to the rapid development of a nation by providing essential infrastructure that will drive connectivity and new opportunities for Myanmar,” said Jon Frederik Baksaas, CEO of Telenor.
Telenor plans to cover 90% of the country over the next five years and Petter Furberg, CEO at Telenor Myanmar, said that within weeks services would be available in more than 12,000 outlets in the initial three cities.
Despite falling slightly behind Ooredoo, Furberg said he is “confident that we are entering the market with a competitive and attractive offering both for voice and mobile data”.
Formerly the only telecoms provider in Myanmar, MPT partnered with Sumitomo Corp. and KDDI in Japan to develop its existing infrastructure with a view to launching mobile and broadband services in Myanmar.
