Taiwan confirms plans for second stage of 4G mobile auction

Taiwan is set to conduct the second stage auction of 4G mobile spectrum in Q3 next year.

Six operators are expected to launch bids, according to reports, and the auction is projected to raise funds of over $500 million.

190MHz frequency spectrum will be released, including 50MHz for TDD-LTE technology and 140MHz for FDD-LTE technology, as operators across the country begin to improve their 4G offerings.

The National Communications Commission (NCC) in Taiwan released a total of 270MHz of frequency spectrum in the first stage auction last year, and the release of the 50MHz is expected by Q3 2015.

Shih Shih-hao, the chairperson of the NCC, projects that mobile broadband demand is expected to reach 1000MHz by 2020, and he confirmed the regulator will also take into account the advent of 5G when the time comes.

Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, Far Eastone Telecom, Taiwan Start Cellular, Global Mobile and Asia-Pacific Telecom are said to be interested in taking part in next year’s second stage auction.
