Just two months after the company dropped its bid to acquire T-Mobile US, SoftBank is now thought to be exploring new ways to compete with its rivals worldwide.
Rather than directly expanding its telecoms network, it seems that SoftBank is now looking towards content creators, whose products are may entice potential mobile subscribers.
According to The Wall Street Journal yesterday, a person familiar with the matter said that talks between SoftBank and DreamWorks were in the early stages but they could lead to a distribution partnership or a SoftBank investment in DreamWorks, rather than an outright purchase.
The talks were also reported by The Hollywood Reporter over the weekend.
A SoftBank spokesperson said that the company had no comment.
DreamWorks has produced some of the world’s biggest animated films including Shrek, Madagascar and How to Train Your Dragon.
The Japanese firm was also rumoured to be investing in messaging app Line, but this was later denied by the company’s COO.
