Huawei’s XG-PON solution, also known as 10G-GPON, is designed to boost connection speeds by up to 10 times when compared with existing fibre-based broadband services, and is a self-proclaimed future standard for optical-fibre subscribers.
The two companies completed successful tests on Telefónica’s network where simultaneous download and upload speeds of 1Gbps were reached using Huawei technology, and Telefónica hopes the solution will enable it to remain a competitive player in the Spanish FTTH market.
1Gbps speeds will enable subscribers to upload and download large volumes of online data – like photos, videos and movies – 100 times faster than is possible with a 10Mbps connection. It is also expected to provide a high-quality user experience, comparable to accessing the data on a user’s own hard drive.
Telefónica and Huawei share a longstanding relationship and in July this year the pair partnered for the joint development of optical distribution network (ODN) solutions.
