Huawei, KPN and China Mobile complete IMS VoLTE roaming call

China Mobile and KPN Netherlands have collaborated with Huawei to demonstrate what is claimed to be the industry’s first international IP multimedia subsystem (IMS)-based VoLTE roaming call between Europe and Asia.

The call was initiated by KPN Netherlands and connected by China Mobile, using iBasis as a tandem office.

“Huawei is committed to promoting commercial VoLTE deployment globally. We feel honoured to co-operate with KPN and China Mobile to complete this call,” said Long Jiping, VP at Huawei Core Network. “As 4G evolves, Huawei will continue to work with both operators to stimulate a smooth network evolution from 3G. This will bring higher-quality service experience to their users.”

The trial successfully demonstrated high-fidelity voice and video capabilities, providing the foundation for long-distance communications, and verifying the commercial deployment of international VoLTE roaming.

A number of operators worldwide have been implementing LTE-roaming across a range of geographies, including SoftBank and Syniverse in Japan in August 2014.
