Following SoftBank’s acquisition of Sprint in July 2013, Miyakawa leaves his position as head of network operations at SoftBank to join the US carrier.
The position has been newly created and Miyakawa comes in above existing CTO Stephen Bye who, alongside chief network officer of the company John Saw, will report directly into Miyakawa.
Miyakawa will be responsible for Sprint’s network and technology organisation, which includes strategy, operations and performance, as well as leading its relationships with vendors.
Having joined SoftBank’s board of director in 2003, Miyakawa oversaw the company’s establishment as a mobile market leader in Japan, and will remain an EVP and board director at SoftBank Mobile, SoftBank BB and SoftBank Telecom.
“Miyakawa-san transformed the SoftBank network in Japan and I’m confident that his expertise and leadership will help us do the same thing for Sprint customers,” said Marcelo Claure, CEO at Sprint, who Miyakawa will report directly into.
“We already have made substantial progress on the Sprint network and it is performing better every day. He will work directly with our network team as we continue to build out our network to take advantage of our strong and unique spectrum position.”
