TIM upgrades north Brazil network to 100G

The Brazilian mobile operator has selected Xtera to upgrade its infrastructure linking Manaus, Porto Velho and Cuiabá.

The move forms part of a wider network upgrade in the North Region of Brazil, which will also see a second route deployed to the Amazonian city of Manaus.

TIM plans to add a total of more than 2,600 km of high-capacity links into the region to support the high demand for bandwidth.

 “The investments in innovation that enabled us to be the first operator to achieve multi terabit/s capacity with minimum regeneration in such challenging routes reinforce TIM's commitment to improving and expanding its networks throughout Brazil," said Cicero Olivieri, director of fixed & transport network of TIM Brasil. "This benefits not only our operations and customers but the population of the entire region by enabling cost effective broadband services."

In late October, Mexico’s América Móvil, Spain’s Telefónica and Brazil’s Oi were rumoured to be considering a joint bid for TIM.
