CSL makes LTE-A upgrade

Hong Kong mobile operator CSL has revealed the commercial upgrade of its 4G network to LTE-Advanced (LTE-A), using carrier aggregation across two 20MHz bands.

The aggregated spectrum allegedly allowed for theoretical download speeds of up to 300Mbps, and CSL claims to be the first mobile player in Hong Kong to offer these services on an LTE-A carrier aggregation network.

CSL has 20MHz of spectrum in each of the 1800MHz and 2600MHZ bands which it aggregated to boost LTE speeds from 150Mbps to 300Mbps in parts of Hong Kong.

“We will continue to upgrade our 4G LTE network and increase the maximum speed of [our] mobile broadband network from 150Mbps to 300Mbps throughout the territory,” said Alex Arena, managing director of CSL’s parent company HKT, in a statement.

The service went live yesterday [Monday December 22] in a number of new territories such as Sha Tin, Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Fanling, Lok Ma Chau, Kam Tin and Shek Kong.

It is also available in the Kowloon West areas of Lai Chi Kok and Mei Foo, as well as Tsim Sha Tsui.

CSL plans to extend coverage to Ma On Shan in early 2015.
