Huawei and IB-RED upgrade LTE coverage across Balearic Islands

Huawei has provided its enterprise LTE (eLTE) system for Spanish mobile operator IB-RED to cater to the increasing demand for faster internet access in the Balearic Islands.

The solution is expected to increase speed and coverage of IB-RED’s network, which utilises WiMAX and Wifi technologies that run on the 5.8GHz band.

A tourist destination in Spain, the Balearic Islands has an average of 20 million visitors each year.

"The eLTE network on Majorca now provides a downlink data rate 50 times that of the previous WiMAX network, ensuring both visitors and residents can enjoy stable high-speed access and unlimited download service anytime, anywhere on the island," said Alberto Navarro, IB-RED’S CEO.

The eLTE system supports a coverage radius of 15-25km (using a single eNodeB) and a maximum downlink data rate of up to 100Mbps to cover the scattered and sparsely populated Balearic Islands, according to Huawei. In addition, a compact evolved packet core (EPC) solution is used to integrate all core network element (NE) functions into one rack, reducing network deployment complexity, the statement added.

IB-RED has deployed the eLTE network on the islands of Majorca, Ibiza and Cabrera, and plans to continue the rollout to the remaining Balearic Islands of Menorca and Formentera.
