Russia’s MTS acquires three SMARTS assets

Russian operator Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has acquired the regional assets of SMARTS, a mobile operator active in the Volga and Central regions.

The company acquired three companies – Penza-GSM, SMARTS-Ivanovo and SMARTS-Ufa – through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Telecom Povolzhye, for RUB 3.13 billion ($55 million), including debt.

The deal will enhance MTS’s spectrum resources in the affected regions. In the 900 MHz range, Penza-GSM and SMARTS-Ivanovo own 6.2 MHz and 10 MHz of mobile spectrum respectively. In the 1800 MHz range, Penza-GSM, SMARTS-Ivanovo and SMARTS-Ufa own 14.8 MHz, 14.2 and 14.6 MHz respectively.

MTS is Russia’s largest mobile operator.
