Kerala to be India’s first optical fibre state

Kerala will be the first state in India to be fully covered by broadband connectivity under India’s National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) project, reported India’s Business Standard.

The state of Kerala will be fully connected by the end of March. The NOFN was launched in 2011 and aims to provide high-speed broadband connectivity to 250,000 villages by the end of 2016. The estimated cost of the national fibre roll-out is expected to be about $4.8 billion (Rs 300 billion).

The government has set a target of rolling out the optical fibre network across 50,000 villages by the end of this financial year, 100,000 by March 2016 and another 100,000 by the end of 2016.

In order to speed up the project, India’s Department of Telecommunications has warned of action against officials who are not taking decisions or are delaying them.
