Nigeria’s MainOne opens west Africa’s largest data centre

MainOne has opened its $37 million Tier III Lekki data centre in Nigeria.

The 3,500 square metres facility has capacity for 600 rack spaces and aims to provide corporate customers with co-location, cloud and managed services.

It claims to be the largest data centre in west Africa and aims to tap in to increasing demand for connectivity in the region. It will managed under a new subsidiary branded as MDX-i.

Nigeria’s minister of communications technology, Omobola Johnson, who was present at the facility’s opening, said the data centre complements Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan.

“Availability of world class data centers in Nigeria is critical infrastructure required for the implementation of our Broadband initiatives,” said Johnson. “The accomplishment by MainOne is indeed significant as it provides an outsourcing and cost effective model to further drive ICT adoption.”

The data centre will begin serving its first customers next week and MainOne said it aims to open more data centres in Nigeria.
