The vendor is aiming to triple capacity on TPE, which links China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and the US. It will deploy its GeoMesh integrated submarine and terrestrial solution, which includes the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, on the 11,000km route.
“This network enhancement will substantially enhance TPE’s ability to provide high bandwidth for the growing Internet traffic and applications such as video and e-commerce,” said Ed McCormack, VP and GM of submarine systems, Ciena.
Ciena is aiming to increase capacity on the Japan-US cable network by over 60% by deploying its WaveLogic 3 8D-2QAM modulation capability and Flexible Grid technology.
The upgrade follows a 200G trial in February 2014, and builds on the 2012 deployment of Ciena’s 100G submarine solutions across the 22,000km network.
“Selecting Ciena for this upgrade helps position us to meet growing demand with our existing infrastructure, not just today but for years to come,” said Masahiro Soma, Japan-US CN upgrade procurement group co-chairman.
