Telefónica signs 20-year agreement with Allied Fiber for US connectivity

Telefónica signs 20-year agreement with Allied Fiber for US connectivity

Allied Fiber is to provide dark fibre access in the US for Telefónica in a landmark 20 year agreement.

The deal, which was announced at Metro Connect 2015 yesterday, will provide Telefónica with access to Allied Fiber’s Southeast network segment, which covers over 360 miles across the state of Florida.

The move is said to strengthen Telefónica’s infrastructure in the Americas by connecting its subsea cable landing stations, such as Sam-1 and PCCS, through major peering points within the US. It is also said to diversify Telefónica’s access points to the US, as well as increase its connectivity with Colombia, Ecuador and Central America.

Allied Fiber CEO Hunter Newby described Telefónica as a “marquee customer” for the company:  "We are very pleased to have this relationship with such an established global service provider and we look forward to working with them in the future," Newby said.

He also revealed to Capacity that he had been working on the deal since November 2007, and expects to make more major customer announcements over the coming months.

“With this infrastructure, Telefónica will increase reliability and diversity through its global network. This will result in improved quality of experience for final customers,” said Serafin Borrego, IT, Network and Platforms Director at Telefónica Global Solutions.
