Vodafone UK to launch VoLTE and Wifi-calling

Vodafone UK is set to launch voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Wifi-calling this summer.

Vodafone’s VoLTE service will allow voice calls to be carried across its 4G data network, instead of using the 2G or 3G voice network. The operator said it has been testing both technologies in its network laboratory since last year. It plans to conduct user trials ahead of its commercial launch.

In addition, the network also plans to offer Wifi-calling which is suited to customers in remote areas or in places where indoor signal is poor. The service uses an existing Wifi service to automatically provide customers with a voice signal without the need to go through an app.

"Our Wifi-calling service will ensure that our customers never miss a call. It is another important step towards our commitment to build the UK's strongest converged network," said Jeroen Hoencamp, CEO of Vodafone UK.

The rollout of both VoLTE and Wifi-calling technologies are part of Vodafone’s £1 billion investment in its UK network and services this year.

Last month, the companyannounced plans to launch home broadband in the UK this Spring.
