Former president of Boeing Satellite Systems International (BSSI), O’Neill holds 37 years’ experience in the aerospace industry, with principle involvement in satellite and launch vehicle programs.
In a welcome note to O’Neill, Ahmad Abdulkarim Julfar, chairman of Thuraya’s board of directors, said: “[O’Neill] is an exciting addition to our board as his expertise in the aerospace industry will help shape the strategy for Thuraya’s growth and next-generation capabilities.”
O’Neill is expected to boost Thuraya’s strategic planning as it looks to enhance its global reach and enable the company to expand its position in the mobile satellite services industry.
Thuraya holds a 50% market share in its coverage area which includes 160 countries across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia, and in April last year signed an agreement for satellite services with Airtel’s African unit.
Later in August 2014, Thuraya appointed Mark Courtney as general counsel.
