LG Uplus and KDDI claim world’s first VoLTE roaming service

LG Uplus and KDDI claim world’s first VoLTE roaming service

South Korea’s LG Uplus has launched what it claims is the world’s first voice over LTE (VoLTE) roaming service in partnership with Japan’s KDDI.

The commercial roaming service will be first available to customers of LG Uplus and KDDI on LG’s G Flex 2 smartphone in South Korea and Japan. The service will enable subscribers to make high-definition voice and video calls over the companies’ 4G networks.

According to the operator, the VoLTE roaming services connect calls 20 times faster than through 3G roaming.

“The successful launch of the VoLTE roaming services now allow LG Uplus subscribers to use these services while roaming abroad and will help the firm gain great momentum in developing next-generation roaming services,” an LG Uplus official said.

In February 2015, Japan’s NTT DoCoMo, South Korea’s KT and Verizon Wireless announced the completion of VoLTE roaming trials demonstrating HD voice and video calls between different countries.
