Ametsreiter announced his resignation as chief executive of Telekom Austria on Monday, and will now take on the role of CEO for Vodafone in Germany, where the company is fighting fierce competition with former state monopoly Deutsche Telekom.
“Hannes is an experienced industry leader with an extensive background in convergence, marketing and brand,” said Vittorio Colao, Vodafone chief executive. “We are delighted to welcome him to Vodafone.”
Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefonica Deutschland were all bidders in Germany’s spectrum auction; bidding for which closed today with a total bidding amount of €5.08 billion ($5.74 billion).
Ametsreiter became chief executive of Telekom Austria in 2009 and last year led the company through its acquisition by America Movil; ensuring that Vienna remained the headquarters of America Movil’s central and eastern European activities.
Shares in Telekom Austria have fallen 4% since the news of Ametsreiter’s departure.
