The investment is designed to ensure the company delivers on its promise to provide a reliable and high-quality service, and will include network upgrades for its voice and data services, customer service improvements and community development initiatives.
Phase one of the project has already been completed, and involved legacy hardware being replaced and radio network elements being expanded to enhance coverage and voice quality in Mombasa, Nairobi and Kitale.
Phase two is due to commence in due course and will see a focus on improved data speeds and faster internet services. Nokia Networks is working closely with Airtel on this phase, and will deploy its mobile technology to enhance the operator’s network capacity and reliability.
Airtel expects all of its networks to be 4G LTE ready by the end of 2015.
In October 2014 the operator added Topyster Muga and Venkateshwaran (Venkat) Ramakrishnan to its executive team, and in April this year, appointed Abdullah Khamis as its commercial director.
